The ENCORE book group has chosen James P. Ronda's historical work, Astoria and Empire,* as their reading assignment for Fall.  Noting that Astoria's bicentennial will be celebrated next year, the book group wanted to be informed of the events that made Astoria a central point of international rivalry.  The British, Russians, Spanish, French and Americans were all competing for strategic control of the area and its lucrative fur trade.  Not since the 1836 publication of Washington Irving's book, Astoria, has a full-length study of our area been made available to the public.  Many lively discussions should arise from reading about how Astoria played such a colorful and important role in becoming part of the United States.

*Astoria and Empire; James P. Ronda, 1990, 400 pages, University of Nebraska Press.  This book is available in both paperback & hardcover, from local libraries, bookstores and online.
