This course will look at the earliest themes, insights, ambitions & speculations of Classical Greek philosophy.  We will begin with the Milesians at the end of the 7th century before the common era, and run through the great sophists, Gorgias and Protagoras, at the end of the 5th century.  In addition, we will look at the "Axial Age" - the era of universal principles of thought in cultures around the world - to see where and how the processes of these Greek philosophies stand with their contemporaries in China, Persia, and India.
