January Lunch Bunch 2011
February Lunch Bunch took place on Chinese New Year - Year of the Rabbit - the Lunch Bunch met at the
Great Wall Chinese Restaurant in Gearhart.  Nancy Anderson taught us Chinese culture through facts and artifacts!  She has had the lovely standing doll since her childhood and she had many other precious things to
show.  I shared some handmade Chinese stationery and a 1975 Chinese magazine with beautiful prints.  It was a wonderful lunch attended by 7 members and 1 guest. Pictures Here

December Lunch Bunch

The December Lunch Bunch got off to an exciting start when they found Girtles, the reserved destination, closed. Girtles has been a long-standing tradition for the December holiday lunch. The group of seven walked over to the Seaside Pig and Pancake and had a great time there instead, followed by an eighth who followed their trail.

The Door Prize was an attractive red square-shaped tin with a Santa on it and big bow. The best part of course was that it was filled with Candy. But here is where it gets spooky (some would say ironic). Madeline Gobel won the prize. Madeline provided fantastic Lunch Bunch events last year and was never eligible to win a prize. Jean Wingate insists that the drawing was fair, and that it was just positive cosmic payback for all the hard work that Madeline has done to make these events run smoothly while also being fun.

LUNCH BUNCH, December 7, 2010
Girtles Seafood & Steak
311 Broadway, Seaside, OR

'Twas a few days before Lunch Bunch, and some in the group
were wonderinf if this time lunch might include soup,
And where would it be served and when would the fun begin?
the secret's out not - come, enjoy the lively din.

The December lunch spot is dictated by tradition.
We want you to come, you don't need permission!
The location is in the Seaside - Girtle's Seafood & Steak
And for dessert they might even have cake.

ENCORE tries hard to be sure all are included.
We're happy to say that no one is ever excluded
12:30pm in the hour, December 7 is the date.
Come if you can- try not to be late.

A can of two of food for the Food Banks
would be welcome, of course, with many thanks.
So dress festively, bring a guest or two
And we'll have a delightful time - ENCORE and you!

July Lunch Bunch
Outstanding weather, sun shining, and 82 degrees on our dashboard thermometer.  Almost too warm.  WOW!

We took a leisurely ride down to Hwy 26 and dined at Camp 18.  Thirteen of us played a variation of Trivial Pursuit.
Towards the end of the game, we watched Gary Webb and Donna Wright duke it out.  Donna won.  She was presented with a lovely gift.

The food was good and plentiful, but nothing beats the comeraderie of our friends and fellow students.

Come join us for next month where we're planning a Lunch Bunch Picnic at Cullaby Lake.

See you there.

Madeline

June Lunch Bunch
What do you know?  Another rainy day in Oregon!!!!!!
Which leaves fourteen dear friends jumping puddles into the Buoy 9 Seafood Restaurant in Hammond.
We even had one brave guest, Helen Feldmeier, who I hope we'll see again, and soon.

After our wonderful meal we started our contest.  We were down to the wire with MaryAnn Ylipelto, Bernie Thomas, and Bob Westerberg.  The contest concerned questions on our government's history. Little did we know that Director, Roger Williams was going to be there.  That seems to be his favorite subject for his Book Group.  We were now able to show off how much of his knowledge rubbed off on us.  The tie-breaker question was won by Bob W., and the prize was a cook book which we hope both Westerbergs enjoy.

Another welcome surprise was seeing Elden and June Walter pop in.  Haven't seen them in some time and they were truly missed.  Welcome back.

If we ever see summer again in Clatsop County, we will try Camp 18 for the Lunch Bunch on July 6, 2010.  The beautiful Camp 18 is out on Highway 26, and because of the distance we are encouraging carpooling.  Just call me
503 325-3330 and tell me if you need a ride, or if you're willing to use your car.  This would be great for the Astoria and Peninsula folks.  Also, another carpool could start in Seaside to take in Gearhart, down to Arch Cape.  This can be a lot of fun even if it is a distance away.

Meanwhile, don't forget to mark your calendars for June 11, for the Spring Recognition Social, and an even bigger Social coming up in August.  Watch for the date and your invitation.

Looking forward to seeing you (hopefully) basking in the sunshine,

April 6th Lunch Bunch
What a nice turnout at our April Lunch Bunch. Besides foul weather and trekking down to Seaside for most of us, we still had a fine turnout of fifteen people. And, three guests were a warm addition to the luncheon. We send a sincere Welcome to Arlene & Gary Jayne, and Sherie Pelto

Pastel colors for Spring was the theme of the day and Phyllis Williams won - hands down - for a lovely lime green outfit. Hope you liked the prize, Phyllis.
For many of us, this was our first time at Pudgy's Restaurant. We were welcomed with a wonderful luncheon set-up, which made it easier for people to talk and meet one another. We had fine food and service, and then the talk got around to our classes and trips. We're all looking forward to next week when we exercise our brains with the new term.

Best of all was the photo taking: I not only had a cell phone that takes pictures, but I remembered to bring my brand new digital camera. I couldn't work the first, and the second had a dead battery. Mary Ann Ylipelto tried and tried to assist, but we both struck out. Hopefully, next month's Lunch Bunch will bring more sophistication in learning how to use this new technology! Wouldn't a class in modern technology be apropos at this time? March Lunch Bunch

About 25 folks, members and guests, came to the Bridgewater Bistro in Astoria to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.  Most of us were glowing green (well, almost), but no one could beat Helen McD with the craziest huge green fedora/hat.  That got us all in the mood, not to mention the lovely green St. Patrick's napkins that she passed around.  Thanks Helen.
Our guest, Mary Alvarez, picked the winning number for the prize, and that went to Mary Ann Ylipelto.  Way-to-go Mary Ann. Hope to see even more of you at next month's Lunch Bunch in Seaside!

February Lunch Bunch

About 22 of us trooped down to Seaside to indulge in Dooger's Seafood Resaurant's Tuesday Special.

There were so many people around us that it was difficult to hear the Valentine's Day Stories, as requested.  We quickly decided the prize would be given by secret number announced by Guest, Gary.  Pam was the winner.

We did get to see Rex and Nancy Anderson, who got to the restaurant earlier than the rest of us because they didn't want to miss Art Limbird's World Heritage Class in the afternoon.  And who can blame them?

These lunches are a wonderful venue for meeting classmates over lunch, as well as new friends.  We meet the first Tuesday of every month at 12:30.  Remember all guests that might be interested in ENCORE, or just want to know what we're all about, are welcome.

Mark your calendars for March 2, 2010.  Lunch Bunch will meet at the BridgeWater Bistro, 20 Basin St., Suite :"A", Astoria (503-325-6777), and the "Wearin' of the Green" will be our theme.  Look in your local newspapers for more information on this and our future get-togethers.

Also, if you need to carpool just let me know.  I will try to arrange it.  We always have such a good time, it would be a shame to miss out.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Stephanie's Cabin to Host Janaury Lunch Bunch

What a wonderful time the Lunch Bunch had at Stephanies on January 5th.  We had about 20 members show up, including two guests that recently became members.

A prize was awarded for the funniest Holiday Story, or New Year's Resolution.  Jean Dominey won, hands down, with an unbelievable but true story.  Leave it to Jean.  No matter how sad the weather looked, there was a lot of laughter in that restaurant.  Can hardly wait to see what this group comes up with next month when we meet at Doogers in Seaside.  This event will be publicized in all our local newspapers.

Please be sure to bring a friend, or two, when you attend the next Lunch Bunch.  This kind of fun needs to be shared.

And, of course, wear your name badges.

Wishing you all a Very Happy and Healthy New Year,
Madeline Gobel, Chairman/Lunch Bunch

Cannery Café Welcomes Lunch Bunch

Cannery Café on 6th Street warmly welcomed us for the November Lunch Bunch and we certainly experienced "togetherness" since there were 17 of us in their small meeting room! We were happy to have guests: Moysha of Astoria, Barbara Pitts of Long Beach, WA, and Jade Finni of Astoria.

The theme for this month was funny Thanksgiving stories – and if you missed the luncheon, you missed a lot of fun. There were three (count 'em, three) stories of men forgetting to either buy or bring home the turkey. There was one that was sung to the tune of Frere Jacque:                It's Thanksgiving, it's Thanksgiving
Save your bread, save your bread
Stuff it in the turkey, stuff it in the turkey
Eat that bird, eat that bird!

And then there was one that wasn't a Thanksgiving story at all but a cute joke:
Two brooms spent a lot of time together in the closet.
                        They decided to get married.
                        The Groom Broom was dressed up in his tuxedo;
The Bride Broom was dressed in her lovely white gown.
After the ceremony the Bride Broom said to the Groom Broom
"I think I’m going to have a little whisk broom!"
The Groom Broom said to the Bride Broom:
"That isn’t possible; we haven"t even swept together!"
Roger Williams won the prize for that one…..

Those who enjoyed the delicious lunch and camaraderie were: Margie Spence, Jean and Carl Dominey, Ella Hill, Bernie Thomas, Elaine L., Madeline and Roger Gobel, Aletha Westerberg, Roger and Phyllis Williams, Moysha, Jade Finni, Mary Ann Ylipelto, Carol Ann Sigurdson, Barbara Pitts, and Marlene Colendich.

October Brought Models To Lunch Bunch

October Lunch Bunch, held at the West Lake Chinese Restaurant, which was under new ownership, brought out the models! Madeline Gobel, Lunch Bunch Coordinator, had suggested we each wear a fall outfit to lunch – well – Madeline admitted to a joke on herself: she forgot and wore a lovely turquoise outfit.  Most of the rest of us forgot also.

We did have three participants for the Fall Wardrobe Fashion Show: Marlene Colendich, Bernie Thomas and Cecilia Balcomb. They each strolled the runway quite glamorously and good-naturedly.  Cecilia’s outfit was chosen as the winner – and she received the prize of two aqua bulbs (for keeping plants watered).

The "New Ownership" people proved to have a sense of humor and gave quite good service.  We found the food to be delicious, too. A return trip would definitely be a good idea.

Those in attendance were Roger and Madeline Gobel, Doug and Cecilia Balcomb, Bernie Thomas, Marlene Colendich, Bob and Aletha Westerberg, and Elaine L. A fun time was had by all!

Summer Fling A Success

Thanks to all of the members who were able to attend the ENCORE summer picnic held at the Astoria Yacht Club. The assortment of food was delightful, everything from savory foot-long hotdogs salads, saurkraut, and chili beans, to cookies, pies, and cake. The weather was beautiful, a bright, warm day. The remodeled Yacht Club offered a large, clean, attractive dining area and a huge kitchen and serving area. The Membership Committee did a wonderful job, organizing and executing this event. And special thanks to members who brought guests, and to members who remembered their name tags. Written tags were provided the guests and those who forgot theirs. The result was a friendly, comfortable afternoon with everyone involved.
